FORNEY, TX — A woman died and an eight-month-old baby was seriously hurt after a crash early Friday on US-80 near FM 460 just outside Forney, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
DPS said the wreck happened around 4:25 a.m. and involved an Infiniti QX3 and a Chevrolet Silverado heading east in the right lane. Investigators said the Infiniti made an unsafe lane change, setting off the collision. The pickup then lost control, struck a concrete barrier and rolled onto its roof.
How The Crash Unfolded
According to DPS, the Infiniti hit the Silverado during the lane change, then continued forward before striking a concrete barrier itself. The pickup’s crash sequence was more severe, with the truck leaving the roadway, overturning and coming to rest upside down. DPS said the Infiniti had a driver and two passengers inside, and none of them were hurt.
The agency’s preliminary findings do not indicate any other vehicles were involved. The crash scene was along a busy stretch of US-80 that carries traffic in and out of the Forney area. DPS has not released any additional details about road conditions, speed or whether anyone was cited.
Victim And Injured Child
DPS identified the pickup driver as 39-year-old Juana Berenice Chavez Ojeda of Forney. She was taken to a nearby hospital after the wreck and later died from her injuries, the agency said. An eight-month-old baby who was also in the Silverado was transported to a hospital with what DPS described as suspected serious injuries.
Authorities did not say whether the child was secured in a car seat or provide any update on the baby’s condition beyond the initial injury description. The names of the people in the Infiniti were not released, and DPS did not say if any further medical treatment was needed for them.
Agency Investigation Continues
The Texas Department of Public Safety said its crash investigation is still underway. That means investigators are continuing to piece together the events leading up to the impact and the rollover on the eastbound lanes near FM 460. For now, DPS is treating the lane change by the Infiniti as the preliminary cause of the crash.
