MAGNOLIA, TX — Magnolia police say two officers shot an armed suspect during a traffic stop late Saturday night after the driver allegedly refused to get out of his vehicle or give his name. The stop happened around 11 p.m. on Sugar Bend Drive, just off FM 1774. Police said one officer opened the driver’s door in an effort to remove him from the car. When the driver reportedly reached toward a door panel, the officer tried a Taser but it did not work.
Police said the driver then reached back to the door panel, pulled out a pistol and raised it toward the officer. At that point, the officer and a second officer at the scene shot the suspect multiple times. After police said the man was no longer a threat, officers began life-saving measures before medics took him to a hospital.
Police Describe The Stop
Investigators have not said what led officers to stop the driver in the first place. They have also not identified the man involved. Magnolia police said the encounter escalated after the driver refused to cooperate with the traffic stop and would not provide his name. The department’s account says the situation changed when the officer tried to remove him from the vehicle and the driver appeared to reach for something in the door panel.
According to police, the Taser deployment did not stop the suspect from continuing to reach toward the panel. Officers then said he produced a handgun and pointed it at police. The shooting followed immediately after that threat, and the suspect was later transported for treatment. Police have said he is expected to recover from his injuries.
Charges Already Filed
Magnolia police say the suspect is now charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. They also said he has an outstanding warrant in Harris County for fraud. No additional charges have been released yet, and police say more information about the suspect will be made public later this week.
Because the man has not been identified, police have not released his age or other personal details. The department has also not said whether the traffic stop was connected to any other investigation. For now, the criminal case appears to be moving separately from the review of the shooting itself.

Magnolia police said the incident happened on Sugar Bend Drive, a residential road near FM 1774. The location and late-night timing are among the few confirmed details as the case remains under review.
